Cylindrical projection
These are constructed by projecting the shadows of the globe onto a cylinder, just touching the globe on which the light is supposed to be placed at the center of the globe. The scale is correct only along the equator. Mercator projection is an example of cylindrical projection. In this projection the latitude are drawn parallel to the equator. The areas ways from the equator are exaggerated, thus not useful for higher latitudes. The pole which is a point is represented by a line equal to the equator. The meridians are perpendicular to the equator and parallel to each other. It is very much useful for navigational purposes since it shows the correct direction.
