In order to correlate the time systems of various countries on an international basis, the world has been divided into 24 longitudinal time zones. Starting at the Greenwich or prime meridian, times zones are centered on meridations at 15 degree intervals, this is the longitudinal distance the sun appears to travel every hour. Zones to the east of the prime meridian are one hour ahead of green which time for each 15 degree, which those to the west are one hour behind green which time for every 15 degree.
