some important features of elements of map

the global network of meridations and parallels represent thru shape, equal area, correct distance and direction. But the spherical globe can not be represented on a flat surface without losing one ore two of its properties. All map projections have some type of distortion of deformation. Depending on the projections properties, the distortion may be area, shape, size, distance, direction, or scale. No projection is free from any kind of distortion. The cartographer or mapmaker must select a projection that will result in a minimum of distortion in relation to the map theme or purpose, the amount of land area shown and the portion of the earth’s surface being represented on the map.
Based on the purpose of map,  projections can be divided int o three categories, i.e. correct area, correct shape, and correct directions projections.
